Iceland’s total solar eclipse: Clouds, darkness and a last-minute glimpse of the sun’s corona

August 12 2026 was a unique and unforgettable day that the weather did not manage to ruin

For 72 years, Iceland had waited for the moon’s shadow to return. When it finally arrived on Aug. 12, 2026, the country faced the one thing no eclipse chaser can control — and especially not in Iceland — the weather.

Clouds and rain covered much of western Iceland, threatening to hide a total solar eclipse that had attracted visitors from around the world. In Reykjavík, where totality had not occurred since 1433, the sun disappeared behind thick cloud rather than behind the black silhouette of the moon.

Yet in parts of the Westfjords — and in a few extraordinarily fortunate locations elsewhere — gaps appeared at just the right moment. Against the odds, some observers saw the spectacle Iceland will now have to wait almost 170 years to experience again.

A heartbreaking forecast

For Icelandic science communicator and eclipse chaser Sævar Helgi Bragason, the eclipse had been more than a decade in the making. “I had looked forward to this day since March 20th, 2015, ever since we had a beautiful and very deep partial solar eclipse in Iceland,” Bragason wrote after the eclipse. “To see the jewel in the solar system, the Sun’s corona in the sky above Iceland at home with friends and family, was a dream that would never come true.”

Bragason knew Iceland would always be a meteorological gamble. But when the final forecasts arrived, the prospects were bleak. “What was meant to be the most memorable day of my life was turning into some kind of a nightmare,” he wrote. “I knew our odds before, but never really expected us to be completely clouded out almost everywhere.”

Across Reykjavík, Reykjanes and Snæfellsnes, the weather deteriorated. Around Hellissandur, cloud thickened and drizzle developed. Reykjavík was overcast with rain showers. The Westfjords offered the best hope. The forecast there allowed for breaks in the clouds, and that proved crucial.

The eclipse begins

The partial eclipse began at about 16:45 GMT, beginning a two-hour event that would culminate in the moon’s umbra — its dark central shadow — racing across western Iceland at roughly 3,400 km/h (2,100 mph).

The longest totality on land would come at Látrabjarg in the Westfjords, where the sun would disappear for 2 minutes 13 seconds. Hellissandur would get about 2 minutes 7 seconds, Ísafjörður 1 minute 31 seconds, and Reykjavík about one minute.

For Bragason, who had previously experienced four total solar eclipses, it was going to be a first. “After experiencing four total solar eclipses, now for the first time, I would experience a totality in a downpour,” he wrote.

Iceland suddenly goes dark

At 17:43:28 GMT, the moon’s umbra first touched Iceland at Straumnes lighthouse in Hornstrandir. It then swept across the Westfjords, Snæfellsnes, Reykjavík and Reykjanes before leaving Iceland just seven minutes later.

Even where the sun remained completely hidden, the effect was unmistakable. Daylight collapsed. Colors flattened. The air cooled. An Icelandic afternoon abruptly became something resembling night.

Arctic Adventures guide Þórhallur Ævar noticed that Arctic terns, noisy before totality, almost completely fell silent. He could hear only about three birds. An evening-like glow appeared along the western horizon, and a cold breeze arrived. “Then, like opening a curtain slowly, everything got bright again,” he recalled. “The birds got loud again, and the temperature rose by about 5°C in two minutes.”

In Reykjavík, crowds gathered beneath heavy clouds outside Hallgrímskirkja. They couldn’t see the corona, but they cheered as darkness engulfed the city and again when daylight returned.

“It was sort of surreal, and it was strange,” Reykjavík resident Hakon Skulason told Reuters. “It was like from another planet or something.” Brazilian teacher Maria Ortiz was equally moved. “It went completely dark and suddenly the day came again,” she told Reuters. “It was really beautiful.”

Bragason had spent the days before the eclipse insisting that cloudy totality would still be worth experiencing. Even he was surprised by its intensity. “It turned out to be even more spectacular than I expected,” he wrote. “We got the most sudden, briefest, beautiful, unique and unforgettable night of our lives.”

Chasing holes in the clouds

Elsewhere, some eclipse watchers got extraordinarily lucky. At Hellissandur, one observer reported online that the sun had been hidden all day until, with about five minutes remaining before totality, the crescent sun suddenly appeared. The gap lasted through totality before clouds returned.

In the Westfjords, observers had even better luck. Visit Westfjords reported rapidly varying cloud, with the sun sometimes appearing clearly before disappearing again minutes later. Some observers saw the sun totally eclipsed, while others experienced only sudden darkness beneath the clouds.

In Reykjavík, Bragason almost missed the eclipse entirely. Endless calls, emails and media requests continued until the last minute, and he was still talking to U.S. media as totality approached. He had no time to set up his own cameras.

Fortunately, he had a backup. He had given his neighbor a Seestar S30 Pro smart telescope to take to Látrabjarg in case the westernmost Westfjords got a break in the clouds. It was a good decision. The telescope captured the totally eclipsed sun during Látrabjarg’s totality — the longest anywhere on land in Iceland.

More than a shadow

A fortunate few saw what everyone had dreamed about: the moon covering the sun and the corona appearing in Iceland’s sky. Most saw something entirely different — and discovered that a total solar eclipse is not solely about what happens to the sun. “To see tears in people's eyes, hear shouting and gasps only reinforced my view that a total solar eclipse is by far nature’s grandest spectacle,” Bragason wrote.

A total solar eclipse is just a fleeting moon shadow. What gives it meaning is everything and everyone that surrounds it — the incredible people who spent years preparing their nation, the building anticipation, the uncertainty and, finally, people standing shoulder to shoulder in the shadow of the moon.

The eclipse of Aug. 12, 2026, will find its place in Iceland’s story. It wasn’t the perfect clear-sky eclipse that so many had hoped for. Instead, it became something distinctly Icelandic — unpredictable, weather-beaten, and utterly unforgettable.
