Privacy policy

Last updated 15 October 2026

This policy covers the Iceland at Night app for iPhone and Android, and the website icelandatnight.is. Part 1 is about the app, and part 2 is about the website.

Part 1: The app

Iceland at Night is made by Voyager ehf in Iceland, owned by Sævar Helgi Bragason and Gísli Már Árnason. This policy explains what the app does with information about you, and what it does not do.

The short version: an account is optional, and there are no analytics. The app asks for your location only when you tap for it, and your position stays on your phone.

What the app keeps

Very little. The app works without an account. Unless you sign in, we never ask for your name, email or phone number. Three things live on your phone:

  • Your location, if you grant it. It puts you on the map and sets the distance to each camera.

  • A random install id, made on your phone and kept in its secure storage. The app sends it to our server when you turn on notifications, and to RevenueCat when it checks for Pro.

  • Your settings and the latest forecast data, so the app opens fast.

Location

The app asks for your location in the first-launch walkthrough, in the notification settings and when you tap Request location in the menu. You can say no and use the app without it. With permission, it reads your position while the app is open, shows it on the map and works out how far away each camera is. Your position never goes to our servers or to anyone else. You can withdraw the permission at any time in your phone’s settings.

Our servers

Forecasts, cloud cover, camera images and stories come from our server at api.icelandatnight.is, which runs on Cloudflare. Like every web request, these carry your IP address and basic details about your device. Cloudflare works out a rough location from the IP address, such as the city. Our server logs each request with these details and keeps the logs for up to 7 days, so we can find and fix faults. We use them for nothing else.

Map and photos

Some imagery loads straight from its source, so those providers see your IP address too:

  • CARTO, for the map tiles.

  • NASA, for the Blue Marble ground imagery.

  • TourDesk, for the tour photos.

Notifications

If you turn on notifications, the app sends our server your install id, the push token your phone gives us, whether it is an iPhone or an Android phone, the app’s language, and the notifications and cameras you picked. We use these only to send the notifications you asked for. Each notification goes through Expo’s push service and then Apple or Google to your phone. We keep a record of each notification we send for 90 days, to check that it arrived. If you turn off notifications in your phone’s settings, delete the app, or do not open it for 120 days, we delete these details.

Accounts

An account is optional. You can sign in with Apple or Google to keep your saved nights on every device. We then store your email address, the sign-in service you used, the id that service gives us, and the day you signed up. If you hide your email with Apple, we get Apple’s relay address instead of your own. We never see your password, and we do not keep your name or photo. While you are signed in, our server keeps a session, which ends 30 days after you last use the app. Your account is not linked to your install id, so notifications and Pro stay with your phone.

You can delete your account in the app’s settings at any time. This deletes your email address, your saved nights and your sessions at once. If you signed in with Apple, we also ask Apple to end the app’s access to your Apple ID. If you stop using Apple sign-in for the app in your Apple ID settings, Apple tells us and we sign you out. If you delete your Apple ID, Apple tells us and we delete your account. Deleting your account does not cancel Pro. You manage a subscription in your App Store or Google Play account.

Pro and purchases

Pro is optional: a monthly or annual subscription, or a one-time week pass, sold through the App Store or Google Play. Apple or Google take the payment, and we never see your card details. We use RevenueCat to check whether you have Pro. RevenueCat receives your install id and the purchase receipt from the store, and nothing else about you. Our server keeps a copy of your install id’s Pro status and its end date, so it knows which notifications you can get. RevenueCat’s privacy policy is at revenuecat.com/privacy.

Sponsored cards

The forecast shows cards from our partners, marked Sponsored. We choose the partners ourselves, and they may pay us to show their cards. No ad network is involved. The cards are part of the app itself: showing one sends no data to anyone, and the app does not log card views or taps. A tap opens the partner’s own website, where its privacy policy applies. Pro hides the cards, and if you have Pro, you can turn them back on in settings.

What we do not do

  • The app sends no analytics and no crash reports.

  • No ad networks, and no tracking across apps or websites.

  • We do not sell or rent any data.

  • The app is not aimed at children under 13, and we knowingly collect nothing from them.

Links to other sites

Tours, car rental, stories and sponsored cards open in a browser inside the app. Those pages belong to other companies, such as TourDesk, Blue Car Rental and our partners, and their own privacy policies apply. The car rental link tells Blue Car Rental that you came from Iceland at Night.

Legal basis and transfers

Voyager ehf is the data controller under the GDPR and Icelandic law. We rely on your consent for location and notifications, on our contract with you for accounts and Pro, and on our legitimate interest in running a working service for the rest. Our servers run on Cloudflare’s global network. Expo, Apple, Google and RevenueCat process data in the United States under the safeguards the GDPR requires.

How long we keep things

An account stays until you delete it. Notification details stay as the Notifications section says. Server logs are kept for up to 7 days. Purchase records follow the retention rules of the store and RevenueCat. We keep nothing else about you.

Your rights

You can ask what we hold about your install id, have it corrected or deleted, or object to how we use it. Email us and we will help, though without your install id we may have nothing to find. If you have an account, you can delete it yourself in the app’s settings. You can also complain to Persónuvernd, the Icelandic Data Protection Authority.

Changes

We update this policy when the app changes. The date at the top shows the current version.

Part 2: The website

What the website keeps

Nothing about you on our side. The website has no accounts, sets no cookies, and uses no analytics and no ad networks. It keeps one thing in your browser: your approximate location, as the next sections explain.

Hosting

The website runs on Vercel and Cloudflare. Like every web request, a visit carries your IP address and basic details about your browser and device. Vercel and Cloudflare use these to deliver the pages and to protect the website, and keep them in logs for a short time.

Your approximate location

When you open the website, your browser asks ipapi.co for an approximate location based on your IP address: the country, region, city, postcode and rough coordinates. The website uses it to centre the forecast globe and the cloud map on where you are. The location stays in your browser’s local storage and is never sent to our servers. The website reuses it for 10 minutes and then asks again. You can remove it by clearing the website’s data in your browser. ipapi.co is a service in the United States, and its own privacy policy applies.

Data from other services

Some data loads straight from its source, so those services see your IP address too:

  • NOAA, for the live space weather data.

  • TourDesk, for the tour photos.

Partner banners

The website may show banners from partners we choose ourselves. They are part of our own pages: no ad network serves them, and they send no data about you.

Links to other sites

The website links to other companies, such as TourDesk for tours, Blue Car Rental, our store on Threadless, Buy Me a Coffee, Instagram, Facebook and YouTube. When you open a link, their own privacy policies apply. The tour and car rental links tell TourDesk and Blue Car Rental that you came from Iceland at Night.

Legal basis and your rights

Voyager ehf is the data controller for the website too. We rely on our legitimate interest in running a working website and in showing the forecast for where you are. You have the same rights as for the app, and you can complain to Persónuvernd, the Icelandic Data Protection Authority. We keep nothing about you on our side, so we will usually have nothing to find.
